Miniaturized Electrochemical Methanol Sensor Using Macroporous Au with Pt Nano-Particles

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are being widely investigated for supplying power for portable electronic devices. Miniaturized methanol sensor was newly fabricated using two macroporous Au electrodes with Pt nano-particles (Porous Au–Pt) and Nafion 112 membrane film. The proposed sensor was easily fabricated by sandwiching the Nafion film with the two porous Au–Pt electrodes. The fabricated electrodes were utilized as a gas diffusion layer and current collector. The sensor was miniaturized in its size, about 0.25 cm2 (2.05 mm in total thickness), which was possibly located in any site of portable DMFC system. The sensor also exhibited fast response time of 10 sec and excellent linear current response to various methanol concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 2 M at 0.8 V of applied potential and wide temperatures ranged from 20 to 100 °C. It exhibited sensitivity of 6.3 mA/mM · cm2 at 60 °C and stable response current during 12 hours.
